In the beginning

Jeff Selby of Brooklyn, NYC is the creator of New Style Hustle. Jeff comes from a family of dancers, roller skaters, artists and musicians. He has been dancing since he can remember and began his more serious dance journey with breaking, hip hop and house dancing. After many years of observing a small group of elders that kept the Hustle partner dance alive in the outdoor summer House music and dance parties in NYC and Brooklyn, Jeff finally picked up the Hustle for himself by attending a weekly Hustle dance social at ballroom dance studio called Dansport.

Being one of the only if not the only dancer at the time to attend both Hustle socials in ballroom dance studios AND attend at House dance/street dance clubs, Jeff soon began experimenting with a fusion of current street dance/club dance energy and classic Hustle patterns and signals. After a few years of this experimentation, Jeff and his original partner Nicole Mercado became legends in the NYC underground club/street dance scene. Soon the demand for their version of the dance became too great to keep to themselves. A professional dancer named Robyn Baltzer came onto the scene in early 2011 to witness this demand and suggested that Jeff teach official classes! Jeff knew that his version of the Hustle was a variation of what the classic style looked like at that point in time. Jeff’s carefree spirit and outside of the box experimentation mixed with Robyn’s vision for the dance to become universally teachable became a phenomenon that attracted and appealed to a new generation of dancers and movers alike. For this reason, New Style Hustle was founded as a new partner dance style and movement by Jeff and Robyn in 2011. Since then they have taught workshops and have performed across the U.S. and around the world where local communities soon formed to continue practicing, sharing, and spreading New Style Hustle. The dance has been featured on The Late Show with David Letterman, NBC Channel 4 News, TED Talks, Lincoln Center with Chic, YAK Films, a Netflix Series called The Get Down, directed by Baz Luhrmann, as its own category at NYC Hustle Congress and has most recently been featured on Vogue.com.

From your living room to the club to some of the world's biggest stages and even to the big screen, this accessible new twist on the Hustle can be shared on any platform and among dancers of any age, experience level or background. The basics are simple, yet the sky is the limit for those who want to take the dance further. The most important element of New Style Hustle is being yourself and having fun!
