Q. How did the name New Style Hustle come about?
A. The name New Style Hustle was coined in 2011 by Jeff Selby although he and his partners had been dancing that way for a few years up until that point. Although the new approach was created just for fun, the dance gained a lot of positive attention from onlookers and fellow club/street style dancers alike. The demand for lessons mounted and so it was suggested that he teach classes. Once Jeff finally agreed to teach classes, a new name was created to make students aware that while NSH is a new approach based off of the original style/style(s) of Hustle.
Q. What is the difference between NSH and Classic forms of Hustle?
A. NSH is based on the basics of the original 3 count Hustle although there are a few key differences. These differences have allowed a new foundation to emerge which can be used to both integrate with classic styles as well as build upon within New Style Hustle.
1. Footwork and body movements. NSH makes a unique connection with street/club solo styles or anything unique/individual to the dance. While a lot of creativity can already be attributed to classic forms of the Hustle, NSH has created a recognizable format that highlights street/club solo freestyle or other dance aesthetics into the dance both stylistically and musically. Unique footwork in both the leader and follower roles as well as a wider range of body movements is encouraged using this format and concept.
2. Rhythm change. Both the leader and follower of NSH will understand both traditional timing as well as be open to freestyled rhythm change within traditional NSH patterns, using a solo freestyle dancers approach to connect with any type of music. The traditional timing is used to understand patterns and coordination with a partner, but the official structure of the dance does not conform to this traditional timing.
3. Slots. While some other styles of the hustle might rotate their slots, NSH stays strictly slotted aside from a few traditional patterns that do travel diagonally. Keeping slots neat and rigid provides the necessary clarity for more freedom of rhythm change and body movements within the classic patterns.
Q. Can anyone dance NSH?
A. Yes! NSH basics are very simple, so it is easy for anyone to get started. Uniqueness and individuality under gentle guidance is encouraged from the very start. That said, there is a lot of room for growth within the dance for anyone who is ready for advancement and continuous growth!
Q. What kind of music is NSH danced to?
A. NSH was born out of House music, but one of the most special parts about NSH is that it can be danced to literally ANYTHING! Since the timing is essentially free, any type of music or musical structure can be interpreted within NSH.
Q. Do I need a partner or can I dance with someone I've never met before?
A. NSH is a social dance and can be danced with a total stranger. Always use your judgement when dancing with someone new. Be courteous of your partners comfort level and personal space. Always remember to have fun!
